Sierra Leone has joined other African nations to commorate the 2026 Africa Day Celebration in Nairobi, Kenya. The continent’s major significant event, held at the Egyptian residency, brought together African dignitaries, global figures, African Ambassador/ High Commissioners, diplomats, performers, designers, policymakers across and beyond the continent who showcased African values and traditions through cultural performances, dance, fashion, cuisine of multiple kinds and virtual arts.
This year’s celebration themed “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems” that gears towards achieving the goals of AU Agenda 2063, aimed at ensuring ample and uninterrupted water supply and immensely improving hygienic sanitary conditions across the African continent. The event created an impressive ecosystem where cultures intersect, traditional and diplomatic interactions, cross- fertization of the continent’s socio- cultural values, offering the participants an enviable opportunity to experience shared African history, enriching diversity and unity that truly defines the African continent.
The traditional performances dignified the depth and the vibrancy of the African heritage while creating an interactive moments for cultural displays, exchange of ideas and collaboration not only within the continent but with other civilisations across the globe.
Prime Cabinet Secretary and the Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs of the RepublicofKenya, Hon. Musalia Mudavadi who served as the Chief Guest of the occasion, also presided over the event by emphasising that the African Day celebration has consistently been a glaring reminder for the continent’s enduring unity, collective vision and its exceptional diversity that’s being admired across the globe. While extolling the participants for their uncommon attendance, Hon. Mudavadi commended the continental leadership for its renewed optimism, steadfast dedication and the unrelenting commitment in addressing the challenges facing the continent.
In attendance were esteemed global leaders such as the UNON Director General and United Nations Under Secretary- General, Madam Zainab Hawa Bangura; the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Madam lnger Anderson; the Dean of the African Diplomatic Corps (ADC) in Kenya, Ambassador Beyene Russom; High Commissioner of the Republic of Sierra Leone to the Republic of Kenya, Lt. Gen.(Rtd) His Excellency Peter K. Lavahun; Minister Plenipotentiary of the Sierra Leone High Commission in Kenya, Mr. Abdul Karim Kargbo; the Head of Chancery and Minister Counsellor, Mr. Henry Nyandemoh; some diplomatic staff of the Nairobi Mission; cross section of the Sierra Leone Community in Kenya; and other prominent officials from the Kenyan Government.
The event undescored a major African gathering, promoting unity, cultural exchange, socio-economic growth and fostering a forward- looking African continental- generational leadership.
